Top 5 Contamination Sources in Cleanrooms and How to Control Them

Maintaining cleanroom cleanliness is an ongoing battle. Understanding the primary contamination sources is the first step toward an effective control strategy.

1. Personnel (80% of contamination)

Humans are the single largest source of particles in any cleanroom. A person at rest sheds approximately 100,000 particles per minute. Proper gowning procedures, cleanroom-certified garments, and strict behavioural protocols are essential.

2. Equipment and Process

Motors, actuators, and sliding surfaces generate particles. Specify cleanroom-compatible equipment, use covers and local exhaust where possible, and schedule maintenance during shutdowns.

3. Materials and Components

Raw materials, packaging, and consumables carry particles and outgassing compounds. Implement a material airlock process with wipe-down procedures and controlled staging areas.

4. HVAC System Failures

Filter leaks, unbalanced pressures, and inadequate air changes can compromise the entire cleanroom. Regular HEPA integrity testing and pressure monitoring are non-negotiable.

5. Construction and Maintenance Activities

Any work that disturbs surfaces or introduces tools generates massive particle bursts. Isolate work zones with temporary barriers, use portable HEPA scrubbers, and requalify affected areas before restarting production.
